Overlook RC Raceway - Northern New Mexico RC Club

The Northern New Mexico Radio Control Car Club has been in existence since 1987. During the Spring, Summer and Fall months club races 1/10th and 1/8th scale electric and nitro powered off-road vehicles as well as 1/10th scale electric touring cars. In the Winter the club races 1/18th, 1/12th and 1/10th scale electric on-road cars and 1/10th scale short course trucks indoors on Ozite carpet.

The Overlook RC Raceway race park consists of three tracks: 1/8th scale off-road, 1/10th scale off-road and 1/10th scale on-road. The off-road tracks have a clay surface and are wetted down before and throughout the race day.

1/8th Scale Off-Road RC Track

The 1/8th scale off-road course is 120' in length and 84' across with 12 foot lanes. The starting gate and pit area is elevated and features an electronically controlled starting gate. Track features include a high speed bank off the straight, a very large two level tabletop, a large triple, and three varieties of doubles.

1/10th Scale Off-Road

The 1/10th scale off-road course is 120' long and 60' wide. The track can be run clockwise or counterclockwise and is a challenge either way. The track boasts three sets of doubles in one section which results in an awesome jump rhythm. There are also two more doubles, one each on the entrance and exit of the banked hairpin at the back corner. The track surface ranges from hard packed to loamy. Tires that work well are Bow-Ties and Calibers. The most common tires are Bow Ties and Calibers. The surface is packed clay, but exhibits a bit of a split personality. When the track is cleaned off and/or wetted down it has very good traction, however, once it dries out and a few heats have been run it can get a bit slippery due to the dust.

1/10th Scale On-Road Asphalt

The parking lot at Overlook RC Raceway facilities does double duty as an on-road 1/10th scale track. The outline for the track is painted on the asphalt. The lanes are 10 feet wide and the entire course is 100' by 40'.

Indoor Track

Overlook RC Raceway indoor track is built using Ozite carpet and RoadRails barriers and is setup inside a school gym. The club currently owns enough carpet to create a 30' x 60' track. The lanes are typically 6' to 7.5' wide, which accomodates 1/18th and 1/12th scale well. The track will run 1/10th scale, but it is just a little bit tight, so the number of cars in a heat are limited.

Indoor Racing at Mountain Elementary School - To get to Mountain Elementary School come all the way up into Los Alamos on 502. Stay to the left as 502 splits. This will put you on Trinity Drive. Keep going all the way back (West) until you intersect Diamond Drive (the hospital will be on your left). Turn right (North) and continue up Diamond. Shortly after passing over a small bridge the road will start to veer left, this is where you want to turn left (West) onto Urban Street. Be careful, it's a blind corner. Go up Urban a few blocks and then turn right (North) onto North Road. Mountain School will be on the right. Go past the school and there will be an entrance with a road that curves down to a parking lot next to the gymnasium.

Outdoor Racing at Overlook Raceway - To get to Overlook Raceway, take NM 4 to White Rock. Turn South onto Rover Blvd. at the first, and only, stop light. Take the first left (East) onto Meadow Lane. Follow Meadow as it slowly curves back South until you see a sign for Overlook Park and turn left (East). Overlook Park is a sports field complex and the raceway is toward the far, East end of the complex on the south side of the road.
